Janet and her son James started a factory in Dundee which is said to have made the first commercially produced marmalade in the world and the company was named after James. In 1828, the name was changed to James Keiller & Son when James' son by his first wife Barbara, also called James, joined the business. James (Jnr) died in 1849.

The colourful version of the marmalade story is that James bought a shipment of over ripe oranges from Seville Spain and his wife, Janet made marmalade out of them. Keiller & Sons' orange marmalade has been my favorite for years. The taste is sweet but not too sweet with a hint of the bitterness of the orange peel. There is really nothing else like it available as it is truly a unique and delicious treat on my morning toast - with or without peanut butter. Dimensions: 11.5cm x 7 James Keiller & Son was influential in popularising marmalade, and was the leading manufacturer of the preserve in the world throughout much of the nineteenth century.
